ONEIDA — Two area high school seniors were honored by the Oneida-Sherrill Lions Club on May 22 for their dedication to others with $500 scholarships and a dinner reception at the Madison House Restaurant.

Megan Ebersold from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School and Mary Gatchell from Oneida High School were awarded the scholarships by Lion Grace Perretta at the meeting. The scholarships are given annually by the club in the memory of Helen Keller, who charged the Lions Club International to become “knights of the blind” in 1925.

Perretta explained the scholarships were given after an application process for OHS and VVS high school seniors who would pursue higher education in social work, special education, nursing or related field of study. They were also judged on their spirit of caring and generosity toward others, she said.

Ebersold said she planned to attend St. Bonaventure University to study cardiology, while Gatchell will go to SUNY-Geneseo for their pre-med program with a concentration on biology.
